Far Cry is the final tape I recorded with Sounds in the Tropics in 1981. My technical producer moved on (and away) to better things. His recording skills were so good that Larrikin Records cut a vinyl LP album from one of the tape copies of Far Cry the following year saving me the effort of tracking down the masters or rerecording the entire album.
This album contains a mixture of the philosophical (The Secret, It's Never Too Late to Have a Happy Childhood, Pretty Girl, Far Cry), the traditional (Banks of the Condamine), the musical (Sunrise) and love songs (all the others).
The music is mainly in the key of E which suits my voice, and contains a fair degree of experimentation with open tunings on the guitar. Banks of the Condamine in particular is an open tuning flight of fancy. I had just discovered open tuning and I was in love with the fresh rich sounds it produced and the range of new and unusual chords.

The tape album cover was produced locally in Townsville and copied on a color photocopier - a revolutionary new invention at the time. Almost everyone had a go at copying banknotes with this new technology which may have been the reason banknotes were plasticised soon after.
The LP album cover was based on a rather flattering black and white, neck down photo of a model - the photos of myself having been rejected as unsuitable. People stil look at me strangely when buying this album and sometimes vaguely comment on how much I seem to have changed.
The album was favourably reviewed in The Australian and flatteringly compared with a recent release by Eric Bogle. At least I was flattered, I'm not sure how Eric felt about it.
